All About Coaching

What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:

“partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaching honors the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole.”

What does a Coach do?

My job is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve;
  • Encourage client self-discovery;
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies; and
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable.

How is Coaching Different from other Service Professions

Therapy: Therapy often times deals with healing past issues while coaching is future focused.  Coaching is about taking action and accountability towards achieving personal and professional goals.

Consulting: Consultants have expertise in a specialized field.  They diagnose problems, propose solutions, and sometimes implement the solutions.  Coaches believe clients are capable of generating the solution for themselves.  It is the framework of support and discovery that the coach provides which allows the client to generate and implement the solution.

Mentoring: From their own experience, mentors guide individuals in a specific industry or career position.  While coaches can mentor new coaches, they typically don’t mentor their clients.  Coaches can coach individuals at any career level or in any industry.

Training: Training programs are designed to help participants acquire learning objectives, as set by the trainers or instructors, through an established curriculum.  In a coaching relationship, the client establishes the objectives and there is not an established curriculum that is followed to help the client achieve their objectives.

Benefits of Working with a Coach

People who work with a coach can expect to see an acceleration of movement toward their personal and professional goals while being encouraged, inspired and supported the whole way.
